Wood Firing for the 21st Century Ceramicist

The contents of the Ceramics and Wood-Firing Course are based on three pillars:

Firstly, wood-firing, an ancient technique, serves to study and learn about its wide range of aesthetic opportunities to achieve one's artistic vision.

Secondly , the demonstration of a wide range of construction techniques for sculpture, pottery and contemporary ceramics open new artistic paths for the works to be made by each one. All works will be wood fired in the Sasukenei - smokeless kiln.

Thirdly the focus of the course will be on the individual artistic development of each participant. With the diversity of ceramic techniques sometimes left a little in the background, the focus on the artistic progression of each individual is vital.

In this comprehensive course, we will come together to fire the Sasukenei - Smokeless Kiln, designed and built by Masakazu Kusakabe in 2015."

COURSE DETAILS

SCHEDULE:

• July 19th:

  3 pm: Accommodation and check-in of participants 

  4 pm: Reception at the Atelier and presentation of the group and trainers; Theoretical introduction to the course.

  7:30 pm: Welcome dinner at Casa das Artes

• July 20th-28th:

  Course from 10 am to 6 pm*, with a two-hour lunch break

  *The schedule is flexible on the days the kiln firing starts and ends. During the Sasukenei - Smokeless Kiln firing, the students will be distributed by turns.

  The studio is open from 6 pm to 9 pm.

• July 29th:

  Until 11 am: check-out from accommodation

CONDITIONS

THE COURSE FEE INCLUDES:

. Integration in a small workgroup (from 6 to 10 participants).

• Training 5-6 hours a day, speaking in English and with support in Portuguese;

• Studio open 12 hours a day;

• Welcome dinner on the first day of the course (July 19th, 2024);

• Lunch during the course, from July 20th to July 28th;

• All the materials needed for the course;

• Woodfiring in our smokeless kiln - Sasukenei;

• Free accommodation in our hostel during the course (10 nights), with check-in on July 19th and check-out on July 29th. The hostel is equipped with two dormitories (female/masculine), a kitchen, shared bathrooms, a washing machine, towels, bed linen, and wi-fi;

• 10% discount on the base rate when booking an individual house (10 nights of the course) with check-in on July 19th and check-out on July 29th. The base rate refers to a stay of 2 people and includes breakfast, equipped kitchen, towels, bed linen, and wi-fi.

CANCELLATION POLICY FOR COURSES AND WORKSHOPS

You may withdraw within 14 days of registration, paying the correspondent transfer fees. Following the EU consumer protection legislation, payments are not refunded past 14 days of registration. The payment will be fully reimbursed if the training cannot be held because of insufficient students.

Suppose the training is canceled by Cerdeira - Home For Creativity for reasons of significant force such as a pandemic, civil disorder, a natural catastrophe, medical or family issues of the teacher, and others beyond our control. In that case, Cerdeira will offer a voucher for a different workshop of your choice. The voucher is valid for two years.
